In 1911, the Massaua-Biscia railway line reached the capital of Eritrea Asmara. It was later supplemented by the Massaua-Asmara road and other road connections to the hinterland. The railway line was continued to Biscia and in 1937 the Massaua-Asmara cable railway to the port of Massaua was put into operation.
A steam train jounrey along the section Nefasit to Asmara of this line is used to give some impressions about how the railway in Eritrea operated and how people live in the country, wich is much different from the life in the capital Asmara. Today the railway is operated for special services, only. All photographs date from January 2019.
